Bomba Academy

What is Bomba?

Bomba is a traditional Puerto Rican music and dance form with roots over 400 years old, born on sugarcane plantations during the colonial era. It was created by enslaved West Africans and their descendants as a powerful means of expression and community.

More than just a genre, Bomba is a dialogue—a vibrant exchange between the dancer, the drummer, and the singer. The dancer’s movements lead the rhythm, challenging the drummer to follow their steps in real time, creating a powerful conversation through sound and motion.

Today, Bomba thrives as a symbol of Puerto Rico’s African heritage, celebrated for its history, creativity, and cultural pride across the island and beyond.
