Each year, PRAHD proudly hosts its Black History Month Celebration, an event dedicated to honoring the rich history, enduring legacy, and vital contributions of Black Americans. This annual gathering brings together community members, leaders, and supporters to celebrate culture, reflect on history, and reaffirm our shared commitment to equity and unity.

Honoring Leadership and Legacy

As part of PRAHD’s Black History Month Celebration, the organization bestows the Arturo Alfonso Schomburg Award upon a Black leader whose life and work exemplify an unwavering commitment to justice, service, and community advancement. Named in honor of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg—renowned scholar, historian, and advocate for the preservation of Black history and culture—the award recognizes an individual whose dedication to education, cultural awareness, and community empowerment reflects his enduring legacy.

This recognition is presented during a private luncheon hosted in honor of the award recipient, bringing together invited guests, community leaders, and supporters for an afternoon of reflection and celebration. The event features a formal honoree presentation, guest speakers, and cultural programming, including an artistic display curated by PRAHD’s Seniors Department that highlights creativity, storytelling, and intergenerational perspectives. Together, these elements promote cultural awareness, education, and unity while honoring both historic and contemporary contributions.
